Shawn A. Geiger, CPA, Ernst & Young, Wichita "Technical Update on Accounting Standards" Receive a technical update on accounting standards important to CPAs in business & industry, including revenue recognition and leases.
Jay Posklensky, MBA, Director, Risk Assurance, PwC, Florham Park, NJ "Implications of the Updated COSO Internal Control -Integrated Framework" First published in 1992, the key concepts in the COSO Internal Control remain largely relevant after twenty years. So why update it? Much has changed in the business and controls landscape since 1992, such as the rapid increase in the use of even more technologies. Jay Poskelensky is a member of the core update team from PwC and in this session he will present an overview of the project, including the purpose and benefits of the update, a summary of the expected changes to the Framework, the proposed timeline for its publication, and the implications for users - highlighting how the new principles based Framework can be applied to smaller enterprises.
Arleen Thomas, CPA, CGMA, Senior Vice President, Management Accounting, AICPA "Putting Local in the Global of the CGMA" Deciding whether to continue using the CGMA designation? What are the benefits to a CPA in Kansas? Receive an update on the new AICPA Chartered Global Management Accountant. Arleen will review available resources and help us learn how to get the most out of this new designation.
Gary C. Allerheiligen, CPA "Creating Tax Strategies during Changing Times" Receive an update on taxation policy both at the Federal and the State level and learn strategies to cope with changing times. Learn about Gary's experience working with the legislature during the 2012 legislative session to sift through pages of bills in an attempt to understand the implications and to communicate these in a coherent fashion to the various constituents. Gary created and gave testimony on a variety of occasions during the session. He will help us understand why it is critical for CPAs in public practice and business & industry to stay involved in Statehouse activities.
Michael W. Hofmann, Chief Risk Officer, Koch Industries, Inc. "ERM is Not Just Defense" In this session, Michael discusses how to apply enterprise risk management strategically to create a culture of prudent risk taking. He shares a vision where defense (including internal controls) is not enough. Instead, he focuses on imbedding risk-adjusted thinking in an organization’s culture – not by dictate but in a way where it becomes second nature. He discusses the importance of a clear vision and risk mentality; nurturing an organization with the right virtues and talents; developing appropriate knowledge processes; applying clear decision rights and responsibilities; and reinforcing behavior with effective incentive systems.
Tammie Wahaus, CPA, CGMA, CFO, TVAX Biomedical, Lenexa "Dashboards: Management Information at its Finest" Tammie provides a brief introduction to information dashboards and how you can use them to proactively manage your business and communicate the status of key performance indicators to the board and senior managers, financial managers, and operations managers.
Dr. Chris Kuehl, Managing Director, Armada Corporate Intelligence "The Role of the United States in Global Economics" Dr. Kuehl provides both an intelligent and interesting view of the global economy. He provides insight into low-cost country solutions; what's going on with China, Mexico, and Europe; his perspective on the housing market over the next few years; the debt crisis; and the impact global economy on US industry.
