Three Reasons to Celebrate

Members of the Kansas Society of CPAs had a roarin’ good time celebrating three leadership milestones at a speakeasy-themed bash on July 25 at the Dockum Speakeasy in Wichita, Kansas.

KSCPA put on the ritz at the ten-year reunion of all ‘20 up to 40’ Leadership Program alumni. Participants were able to reestablish connections, network and share successes as KSCPA honored graduates of the current year’s class, officially kicked off the LEAD TO THE FUTURE, Leadership-Elite Network and welcomed its first inaugural class.

Chase Chastain, CPA, CGMA, M.Acc
Accounting Manager at Spirit AeroSystems, Inc.
Graduate of Wichita State University

“As quoted by Jocko Willink, Extreme Ownership, leadership to me is ‘On any team, in any organization, all responsibility for success and failure rests with the leader. The leader must own everything in his or her world. There is no one else to blame. The leader must acknowledge mistakes and admit failures, take ownership of them, and develop a plan to win.’”

Nicole Koelsch, CPA
Senior Manager at Adams, Brown, Beran & Ball, Chtd.
Graduate of Kansas State University

“Leadership is the action that leads people by not only words but also by example. It is setting a standard that is respected and appreciated that will challenge people to work hard and do their best daily. It is to motivate and guide others to thrive in their work and everyday life.”

Colin Lawter, CPA, M.Acc
Supervisor at Allen, Gibbs & Houlik, L.C.
Graduate of Drake University (Des Moines, IA) & Wichita State University

“Leadership, in my opinion, is someone who leads, and displays this either at the top (executive, manager, supervisor), or in the front (at the scene). Leaders are not afraid to roll-up their sleeves and work along with cohorts in the trenches, rather than hanging back behind letting others take on the brunt of the challenge ahead. It is taking responsibility, ownership of work and career/goals, family, or other endeavor.”

Travis Marfield, CPA
Manager at Sink, Gordon & Associates, LLP
Graduate of Wichita State University

Leadership is unlocking people’s potential to become better.”

Jason Seaton, CPA, MBA
Audit Manager at BKD, LLP
Graduate of Emporia State University

A true leader makes others want to follow not by fear or intimidation or obligation, but by mutual respect and admiration and excitement about the future.”

Jonathan Staats, CPA, M.Acc
Audit Manager at Deloitte & Touche LLP
Graduate of Kansas State University

Leadership for me is based on the foundations of a hard work ethic, openness to learn from others, adapting to change and an ability to inspire others.”

Megan Adams, CPA, M.Acc
Audit Director at BKD, CPAs & Advisors
Graduate of Friends University and Wichita State University

“Leadership is guiding and supporting your team to provide excellent client service and to succeed in their career goals. A key focus of this is training and mentoring your staff while providing timely encouragement and feedback.”

Nicole Cocking, CPA, M.Acc
Accounting Manager at Hall’s Culligan Water
Graduate of Kansas State University

“Leadership is setting a positive example for others, both professionally and personally, that inspires others to be the best version of themselves.”

Jessica Kinsinger, CPA
Senior Associate at K•Coe Isom
Graduate of Wichita State University

“Leadership is having a positive impact on the people around me by what I say and do and inspiring others to follow my example.”

David Lowe, CPA, M.Acc
Manager of Domestic Tax at Spirit AeroSystems, Inc.
Graduate of Wichita State University

“Leadership is having the courage to stand up and say or do something at a critical moment when others will not. Also, leaders always give off positive energy and inspire others.”

Turner Polzin, CPA
Principal at Adams, Brown, Beran & Ball, Chtd.
Graduate of Fort Hays State University

“Leadership is the ability to effectively make decisions for the betterment of the whole rather than just for the individual.  This is true in all parts of life including our organizations, communities, families, and personal relationships.”

Aaron Schmelzle
Tax Associate at Allen, Gibbs & Houlik, L.C.
Graduate of Kansas State University

“Leadership is providing a clear picture for followers that entail wisdom, creativity, and optimism. After followers are in-line with the vision, instill balance with the conflicting interest and make sure everyone is able to participate in the plan.  In times of difficult circumstances, become the intermediary between the situation and success.

Josh Willson, MBA
Associate at K•Coe Isom
Graduate of The University of Saint Mary and Lincoln Memorial University

When people have enough faith to follow someone unequivocally, and trust that no matter what, the person they are following will never lead them astray is what leadership means to me.”
