KU Endowment, Lawrence, Kansas, is accepting applications for the Accounting Operations and Tax Compliance Manager that will manage the KU Endowment Association accounting operations and compliance functions.  This position is directly responsible for ensuring KU Endowment’s tax reporting and charitable organization state registrations are completed in compliance with federal and state requirements for non-profits.  Communicates to management regarding compliance issues or changes in governmental reporting requirements.  Performs 1099 reporting function.  Supervises accounting staff assigned to the Accounts Payable, Scholarship, Loan, and Cash Receipts functions.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and file annual IRS Form 990, Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax, and related schedules.
  • Prepare and file annual IRS Form 990-T, and all other federal and state tax reporting for Unrelated Business Income.
  • Coordinate the Form 990 review with management, external accounting firm and the Board of Trustees Audit Committee.
  • Complete and file the Charitable Organization Registration in all states that require registration for KU Endowment fundraising, and maintain on an annual basis, as necessary.
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of Annual Corporation Report, Foreign Corporation Reports, gift annuity registrations and other operational (non-tax) reporting to federal and state governments, as appropriate.
  • Assist management with annual conflict of interest process.
  • Be alert to potential noncompliance with governmental reporting issues and make recommendations for correction.
  • Review and prepare IRS Form 1099’s.
  • Supervise the Accounting Operations staff.  
  • Recommend system/process improvements to help ensure KU Endowment’s compliance with federal & state reporting requirements, and assist with implementation of approved system/process.
  • Assist AVP & Controller in identifying improvements to accounting and operational controls.
  • Perform projects and other duties as directed or required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field required.  Minimum five years’ experience in accounting, including tax return preparation, and three years supervisory experience required.  CPA certificate with IRS 990 and 990-T return preparation preferred.

Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles required with exposure to not-for-profit accounting desirable.  Strong interpersonal skills and judgment in making decisions.  Outstanding communication skills, both oral and written, required.  Skill in organizing work and attention to detail required.
